Julia Roberts In Running At Beach: Last weekend, two things happened. I turned 40, and Julia Roberts was photographed in a bikini, looking, at 42, like the living embodiment of youthful perfection. That picture had a strange impact on me because, looking at it, I couldn't decide whether it was a marvellous encouragement that with enough hard work and cash, eternal youth is almost within our grasp; or, alternatively, a hideously depressing reminder that while 40 used to be the rose-trellised gateway leading to comfortable middle age, it's now a rallying cry to modern women to hit the gym and succeed like never before.

When I was growing up, forty-something women looked normal. They had a few wrinkles and usually carried a couple of extra pounds. They'd wear inoffensive, comfortable clothes and let their hair do whatever it wanted. They seemed perfectly comfortable in their own skins.
