Many couples choose surprise weddings

July 25, 2008 |12:46 | Gossips  By : Team X

Dan and Maggie Miller's guests arrived for an engagement party, but they got the whole wedding.Believing they'd arrived to celebrate the couple's recent betrothal, guests were greeted by a wedding cake in the hallway, Maggie in a long white gown and the news -- surprise! -- that they were there to witness the marriage.

Surprise weddings turn the traditional surprise party on its head by keeping guests in the dark and hosts in the know. While still rare, they are growing in popularity among couples looking for a different yet low-key way to tie the knot, industry professionals say.

"My best friend and I had always talked about what our weddings would be like: who would be the maid of honor, the bridesmaids, what kind of dresses we'd have," said Maggie, 25. "By the time I got to the point I was actually going to get married, I didn't want to deal with all that stuff."

She and her fianc?, both busy medical students, had considered avoiding the pomp all together and getting married at city hall. The St. Louis natives decided, however, that because most of their friends and family would be in town for the holidays, they could hold a New Year's Eve soiree and include loved ones without getting bogged down in the details of place settings and floral arrangements. The couple took their vows standing on the living room couch, needing the extra height to be visible above the nearly 100 astonished guests.

Hollywood's hidden penchant for art

July 24, 2008 |11:58 | Gossips  By : Team X

Mr Bean wrecking a Whistler or Julia Roberts expounding on a Pollock: in much the way James Bond films help cocktail connoisseurs improve their drinks skills, Hollywood in the past half century has provided key insights into US art.

So says a rare exhibition on film and art opening this week outside Paris in Giverny, the leafy sprawling home of Impressionist giant Claude Monet.

"For Europeans, cinema is the quintessential US art form," said Sophie Levy, chief curator of the Musee d'Art Americain at Givenchy, whose aim is to promote the discovery of US art."But we were surprised to see how many Hollywood films actually featured US artworks, specially those made in the last 20 years."

The Anti-Joys Of Screen Sex With Julia Roberts

July 19, 2008 |17:45 | Gossips  By : Team X

British actor Dominic West has made his biggest impression playing roguish Detective James McNulty on The Wire, but he's also find some success on the big screen: he played Renée Zellweger's lover in Chicago, and was soon after cast opposite Julia Roberts in Mona Lisa Smile. In an interview in today's The Guardian, he recalls the illuminating, grueling, and sometimes extremely annoying experience of working with Hollywood's highest-paid actresses:

"I learned a lot from working with [Renée]," he said. "She was so tough. I would hear the director say, 'Cut' and then wait for instructions; she would demand another 15 takes until she was absolutely happy with the scene. These leading ladies have it tough: they have to be girly enough to remain attractive but retain a steeliness to get their own way too. Plus, they seem to starve themselves all day to stay in shape."
Next came a role opposite Julia Roberts in Mona Lisa Smile.

"The movie didn't make much sense. We would be given new scenes to film out of the blue which, it transpired, had been written by Julia's agent, who was doubling as a producer," he says. "I don't know what anyone was doing there. No one seemed to enjoy it. Especially not Julia. She had just got married and just wanted to be off having sex with her husband. Trouble was, she had married the cameraman on the movie. You can't really relax in a sex scene when the husband is staring right at you."
